An evening with Simon Armitage and LYR at York Theatre Royal on January 24 promises to be a unique and memorable night of poetry and music by Simon Armitage and the band LYR. The evening begins with a poetry reading by Simon Armitage followed by a live performance by the band, comprising Simon, singer-songwriter Richard Walters and multi-instrumentalist and producer Patrick Pearson.
Armitage, who was born and grew up in West Yorkshire is an acclaimed poet and lyricist who also writes extensively for television, theatre and radio. Armitage has published over a dozen poetry collections, two novels and three non-fiction bestsellers. Alongside writing Armitage is a regular broadcaster, an award-winning dramatist and Professor of Poetry at the University of Leeds. His numerous prizes and awards, include the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry and an Ivor Novello for song writing.
LYR’s story began in 2009 when singer-songwriter Richard Walters approached Armitage’s publisher about the possibility of a collaboration. This resulted in Walters setting Armitage’s poetry to music in 2011. Following the success of this collaboration LYR was formed, with the addition of instrumentalist and producer Patrick Pearson. LYR are a firmly established part of the contemporary music scene with two critically acclaimed albums, Call In The Crash Team and The Ultraviolet Age and over five million streams to their name. LYR have appeared at many major festivals over the past three years including Green Man and Blu Dot and completed UK tours and sell-out events at venues across the UK.
