Love Bites: Artist Call Out

AN OPEN CALL TO YORK BASED ARTISTS

Please note: this submission window has now closed.

We would like you to join forces with us in celebrating the restart of live performances when restrictions lift in May. We will be reopening the theatre on 17 May with a season of plays based on the theme of love, and we are looking to commission short pieces on this theme from artists working in any form or medium currently living in the City of York. These pieces will all be performed at our opening night, Love Bites, and then across the following fortnight as a prelude to the theatre production playing each night.

We are looking for artists to create love letters – this could be to a person, a place, an object, the city of York itself, a person who has helped you get through lockdown, a moment in time – or anything else. The love letter can be created through any medium – it could be a poem, a song, a piece of digital art, a dance piece – but should be able to be performed or shared both live and in a digital form, and have a duration of up to 5 minutes.

We are looking to commission twenty love letters. We are offering £1,000 per commission plus £150 each time you perform your piece. If you don’t want to perform it yourself, that’s fine – we will work with you on engaging an appropriate performer. We are very keen to incorporate as wide a mix of art forms and interpretations of what a love letter is as possible.

If you are interested in being commissioned, please write a short proposal for what your love letter might be, how it might be performed live and how you would translate this into a digital form. Your proposal only needs to be a short paragraph. Please also introduce yourself and include links to your website or previous work.

Email your submission to commissions@yorktheatreroyal.co.uk by 22 March 2021. We will contact you by 12 April 2021 to let you know if your proposal is successful.

We want to hear from you!
