Bishopthorpe Camera Club will mount an exhibition of images to accompany our community production of The Coppergate Woman that will be taking place on our Main House stage between Saturday 30 July and Sunday 7 August. The exhibition will run from Tuesday 19 July to Saturday 6 August.
There will be an exhibition of their members’ prints reflecting four themes relating to ‘The Coppergate Woman‘ on display in the windows and our foyer as well as a digital display on the large television screen in our entrance.
Theme 1: Destruction: The Coppergate Woman production references Ragnarök. In the myth, destruction is the precursor to the world (or in this case, York) rising again. Members have been asked to interpret what destruction means to them in the context of York.
Theme 2: Renewal and hope. In the Ragnarök myth, following the apocalypse the world (or in this case, York) rising again and the images in this theme will reflect members’ vision of renewal and hope in and around the City.
Theme 3: Old and new: The Coppergate Woman production has its roots in the finding of the skeleton of a Viking woman was found during the excavations around Coppergate in the late 1970s. The play imagines her coming back to life in contemporary York and, hence, the images in this section represent that juxtaposition of the ancient and the modern.
Theme 4: York’s Viking heritage. The Coppergate Woman production relates Nordic myth and York’s Viking heritage. Although it may not seem obvious outside the Jorvik Centre, it is never far from view for both residents and tourists alike. Think of street names, Viking re-enactments and Viking longboat races. Expect to see images from the Jorvik Viking Festival.
The exhibition is free to all to come and visit between 9am – 5pm (Mon – Sat.) Find out more.
