Behind the scenes with the Mary Rose Director

Mary Rose– Costume Drama

Press Officer Steve Pratt caught up with Director, Angie Millard ahead of the run of Mary Rose beginning October 30th.

Director Angie Millard was determined that York Actors Collective’s staging of J M Barrie’s Edwardian-set Mary Rose in the Studio at York Theatre Royal would look historically correct.

So she ‘directed’ a backstage costume drama as she set about finding costumes that that fitted the brief for the play first staged in 1920.

“I know a bit about the period and noticed there were quite a few skirts, tops, waistcoats and jackets in the sales that looked Edwardian. I added a few details and they provided clean, crisp and appropriate attire for the show,” she explains.

“Hiring costumes can be quite expensive and things can look rather faded and worn. My actors look as if they’re wearing good quality stuff.

“I scoured charity shops and found prices to be high but I got some stylish dresses. I’ve used a skirt which belonged to my grandma, who was born in 1877, and a tweed jacket worn by my brother-in-law with a super waistcoat.

“I feel quite happy with the result. I hope the actors don’t look like they’re wearing hired theatre wardrobe stuff but their own clothes.”

Angie looked no further than her own home for ‘dressing’ the stage set – she’s using antique furniture which she owns.

Mary Rose – written by Peter Pan author J M Barrie – has been described as a ‘strange, sinister ghost story’ making it more than suitable for staging over the Halloween period.

In the cast of the YAC production cast are Beryl Nairn, Chris Pomfrett, Tony Freud, Victoria Delaney, Clare Halliday, Xandra Logan, Joe Lawrence o’Reilly and Joy Warner.

Mary Rose is in the Studio at York Theatre Royal, 30 October-2 November.
