A grant of £5000 from the Theatres Trust Small Grants Programme supported by The Linbury Trust, combined with a generous legacy donation enabled York Theatre Royal to upgrade technical equipment in the Studio space in time for a new season of performances during Autumn.
New LED moving lights and sound equipment were able to be installed at York Theatre Royal’s Studio thanks to the Theatres Trust Small Grants Programme supported by The Linbury Trust and a private legacy donation.
As part of York Theatre Royal’s autumn 2024 programme, the Studio was transformed into a cabaret space with performers taking to the stage from a wide variety of genres including burlesque, comedy, improv, storytelling and music. Titled ‘The Old Paintshop’, the new format was dedicated to the late Terry Bounds, a stage carpenter who worked at YTR for over 30 years before retiring in 2013.
The £5000 grant from the Theatres Trust Small Grants Programme supported by the Linbury Trust, coupled with the legacy donation helped to upgrade technical equipment in the Studio, providing new LED moving lights which significantly expanded the scope of lighting design in the space. The work also improves the energy efficiency and environmental sustainability of the technical equipment in the Studio and kickstarted the theatre’s move to fully replacing lighting with LED units in line with the Theatre Green Book.
In addition to the £5000 grant, a further legacy donation of £8000 helped to cover the costs for these changes. The theatre relies on gifts left in wills to support the ongoing education and outreach programme and to help expand and grow the programme of work on offer. Communications and Development Director Vicky Biles said, “The funding from the Theatres Trust Small Grants Programme supported by The Linbury Trust was so timely to help us make the Old Paintshop season a success. The new moving lighting hugely expanded what we can do in the Studio in terms of design and helps us on our way to becoming more environmentally sustainable in that area.
We are also very grateful to the individual who left a generous legacy in their will – such donations are absolutely vital for us to continue to ensure audiences can enjoy our work for years to come.”
Details of the 2025 season in The Old Paintshop will be announced later this month – with plans to include a wide range of acts including cabaret, drag, burlesque, jazz and more…
Details will be announced on the York Theatre Royal website and social media.
