This April Badapple Theatre Company are bringing their original comedy drama The Thankful Village to the Studio at York Theatre Royal. Written by Badapple Theatre’s Artistic Director Kate Bramley, this moving play features songs and music by SONY Radio Academy Award Winner Jez Lowe.
Three local actors will star in this production. Pip Cook (Edie), who has trained with Wise Children and the National Youth Theatre, Keeley Lane (Victoria) who has performed with the National Theatre and stars in BBC’s Showtrial and Josie Morley (Nellie) who has worked with Hull Truck Theatre and Middle Child.
The Thankful Village follows the lives of three women, from the same rural household, during the long years of The Great War. The women, left behind to cope as their men-folk march off to Flanders, each face up to the challenges in their own way, with resilience, humour, a sense of duty and whatever vestiges of hope they can muster. As the years pass by, the women wait anxiously for news of their loved ones far away. They cannot know that their village will end the war as one of a very few similar communities, for which fate has reserved a special place in history.
Kate Bramley, writer and Badapple Theatre Artistic Director said, “It’s hard to believe it’s over a decade since I returned to Ypres to finish my research and launch the first previews of The Thankful Village. And since then, Jez’s songs from the show have been showcased on BBC Radio 4, performed live with the BBC Philharmonic. We’re so excited to be sharing this 2025 “remix” with our local audiences. Thanks to the amazing support of York Theatre Royal, this April the story inspired by the women of WW1 will ring out clear and true once more!”
The Thankful Village is at York Theatre Royal from 24 April to 26 April.
