Our Press Officer, Steve Pratt caught up with Robin Simpson ahead of his performance as Dame Dolly in Aladdin.
Hello Dame Dolly, it’s so nice to have you back where you belong – in pantomime at York Theatre Royal. Are you happy to be back?
Elated. If only I knew what was going to happen! I can’t wait to read the script and find out what hijinks I’m going to get up to this year. Whatever I’m up to, you can rest assured I will look fabulous!
Who are you playing in Aladdin?
Dame Dolly, Aladdin’s mum. I can’t tell you any more because, as I’ve already said, I haven’t read the script yet. I’m sure to have the starring role this year, as last year that dog stole all my limelight!
Any old pals appearing with you? I hear that villainous Paul Hawkyard will be up to no good again.
Yes, Paul is back and I’m very happy about that. As, I’m sure, are the York audiences. He’s utterly fantastic and a joy to work with. Although he always plays villainous parts, he’s a sweet really.
You’re looking swell, Dolly, how do you keep your looks and your figure?
Thank you. Intermittent fasting, drinking 10 litres of water a day and yoga. They are all things that people do to keep fit. I don’t do any of that. I just have good genes.
Tell us something about your costumes this year. Any with a York theme like last year’s Clifford’s Tower outfit?
You might need to ask the theatre that. I think so, but I don’t know what. They might be a surprise too.
Are you looking forward to hitching a ride on a magic carpet in Aladdin?
Ooh, Yes! Although I might scream a lot. I’m not good with heights. In Peter Pan, when I was flown in at the start of Act 2, I had to concentrate on the wall in front of me, while I waited suspended, so I didn’t panic. It was the only time I concentrated in the show, mind.
Favourite moment from your York Theatre Royal appearances.
Zeus the dog was very special last year. He got all his cues right, which is more than can be said for Paul Hawkyard! But there are a lot of moments. Playing an evil sister in Cinderella was great fun. The boat scene from All New Adventures of Peter Pan is also a great memory.
And the worst?
I’ve already mentioned the flying. Otherwise, it was maybe rehearsing the marshmallow eating scene from Peter Pan. I was nearly sick! We did that again and again and then it was cut from the show!
And finally Dame Dolly any stage roles you’d love to play in the future?
Mrs. Trunchbull in Matilda? Lady Bracknell in The Importance of being Earnest. M in James Bond?
Aladdin is at York Theatre Royal from 3 Dec – 5 Jan.
